The Declaration of Independence

"When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of Nature and Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect of the opinions of mankind requires that they should decree the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..."



These are the opening words of the most important document of the United States of America. The document was signed by the founding fathers of our country, July 4, 1776, in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A long hard struggle had taken place for the freedom of the colonies from British rule, and now the infant nation must have some governing laws. That document by which our nation is governed is called the Declaration of Independence.

After the Declaration had been signed, and as Benjamin Franklin was leaving the Hall, a woman asked him, "Do we have a Republic or a Monarchy?" His answer was, "We have a Republic, if we can keep it."

Our country has seen its share of turmoil and trouble, but all of us, I am sure, would not trade it for any other country in the world. Our fathers have passed on to us a wonderful nation. Let's pray we can do the same for our children.
